Recipe Tuesday: Goulash

A wonderfully flavoured dish and again simple. The difficulty may be getting some of the ingredients, but its well worth the hunt.


  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 medium onious, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds
  • 1 pound of beef stewing steak cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons of salt
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  1. Melt the butter in a large pot over a medum heat
  2. Add onions and cook stirring frequently until wilted (approx 10 mins)
  3. Stir in the paprika and caraway seeds and cook for 1 minute more
  4. In a bowl toss the beeft with the floor to coat well
  5. Add the beef to the onion mixture and cook, stirring for 2 minutes
  6. Add 1/2 cup of the broth stirring and scraping the bottom of th epan
  7. Gradually stir in the remaining broth
  8. Bring to the boil the reduce to a slow simmer
  9. Cover and cook until tbe beef is tender (1 1/2 hours)
  10. Stir in lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste

Server over cooked egg noodles
